Who doesn’t love a good versatile recipe? That’s why I absolutely love this Mississippi Chicken. It has bold flavor, protein-packed, and it can be used as part of a meal or as the main meal! This chicken packs a punch in tacos or nachos but also pairs well with green beans or potatoes. The key though is it’s ready in 20 minutes, which is exactly what I need at dinner time!

Ingredients for Mississippi Chicken Recipe:

- Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast or Chicken Thighs
- Ranch Dressing Seasoning Mix
- Dry Brown Gravy Mix (or Gluten-Free Brown Gravy Mix)
- Unsalted Butter
- Pepperoncini Peppers
When making this recipe gluten-free, be sure that you are using gluten-free ranch seasoning mix and gluten-free brown gravy mix. I use the Pioneer brand for the gravy and Hidden Valley for the Ranch. ALWAYS check all ingredients on the packaging as they can change at anytime.
Step-by-Step Ingredients:
- Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F for 5 minutes with a cake pan or any container that is heatproof. I used an 8-inch cake pan.
- In a small bowl, mix the dry ranch seasoning and dry gravy mix.
- Place the chicken breast into the preheated pan.
- Sprinkle the dry seasoning mixture directly over the chicken.
- Cut the butter into small slices and place over the chicken along with the peppers.
- Air fry at 350 degrees F for 9 minutes, carefully flip the chicken and cook for an additional 9 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches at least 165 degrees F.
- If you want to keep the chicken intact, skip these steps. If you want to shred the chicken, carefully remove the chicken from the cake pan and use 2 forks to shred the chicken.
- Place back in the cake pan and mix well.
- Place the cake pan with the shredded chicken back into the air fryer at 350 degrees F for 2 minutes to warm back up.
- Serve!
Quick Tips for the Most Tender Air Fried Chicken:

- Use similar sized chicken that will evenly cook. Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast or Chicken Thighs can be used.
- Be sure to flip the chicken halfway through the cooking time to evenly cook.
- Add more or less pepperoncini peppers depending on the heat level that you want to achieve.
- If you want to slice and eat the chicken, leave it as is when it’s fully cooked. If you plan to shred it, add back to the air fryer to warm through again after shredding.
- For more flavor sprinkle the chicken on both sides with seasoning.
- To lock in the moisture, preheat the air fryer first.
- Use an 8-inch cake pan or one that will fit the basket of your air fryer that is heat proof.
- Use a meat thermometer to avoid under cooking or over cooking!
Storage Tips:
To store leftovers, add cooled chicken to an airtight container and store in the fridge for 3-4 days. When ready to reheat, heat for 3-4 minutes in the air fryer at 320 degrees F using a heatproof pan.
