If you’re from the South, you know that there is literally nothing that beats crispy fried okra. However, on a busy weeknight, nobody wants to deal with a mess of a deep fryer and the extra oil. This air fryer okra recipe gives you all the classic crunch and flavor without the grease, making it the perfect side dish recipe.
The beauty of using the air fryer is how it transforms a vegetable that can sometimes be “slimy” into a snackable, golden-brown treat. I love making this for my kids because it’s a budget-friendly way to get them to eat their greens, or at least one of them. My older one doesn’t eat anything green, and I’ve given up trying on that one! This fried okra air fryer recipe is so simple that it’s a household staple in our house. If you want to make it without breading, try this roasted okra in the air fryer.

What is an Air Fryer Okra Recipe?
Air Fryer Okra is a modern, healthier take on southern fried okra, where fresh okra slices are coated in seasoned cornmeal or flour and air fried until golden. This method uses an olive oil cooking spray instead of deep frying in oil, which means it uses significantly less oil than traditional deep-frying while still maintaining the crispy exterior.
Why you’ll love Air Fryer Okra:
- Ready in 15 minutes or less – This quick side dish is ready in minutes, a perfect way to use up fresh okra.
- Healthier Alternative – Uses just a light spray of oil instead of a vat of grease!
- Gluten-Free Friendly – I make minute gluten-free and so can you, with cornmeal and gluten-free all-purpose flour.
- Kid-Friendly and Budget-Friendly – This recipe uses what you already have on hand in the pantry with pantry ingredients plus fresh okra.
- Perfectly Crispy – There is never any slimy exterior; it’s always perfectly crispy.
Ingredient Notes:

- Fresh Okra – Look for small to medium pods as they are the most tender, then slice them to place in the air fryer. Alternatively, frozen, sliced okra can also be used for this recipe.
- Cornmeal – Cornmeal provides the southern crunch that you are used to in okra, for gluten-free be sure to use a gluten-free certified cornmeal.
- Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour – Use high-quality flour to help the coating stick to the okra. I use King Arthur Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour. Other brands like Bob’s Red Mill, Cup 4 Cup, and Better Batter work as well. This flour needs to be a 1:1 ratio with regular flour.
- Eggs – This is the “glue” for the breading and a must!
- Salt and Pepper to Taste – I typically only use salt, but you can use both if preferred to taste to give the flavor to the okra.
- Oil Spray – Use a high-smoke point spray, like Grapeseed oil spray, to give a golden finish. I have used olive oil spray regularly, and it has worked well too, even with a lower smoke point. Read more on oil sprays for the air fryer here.
- Ziploc Bag – I like to use a Ziploc bag to easily shake and coat the okra, but you can use a bowl as well.
How to Make Air Fryer Okra:
- Prepare a bowl with the eggs and whisk them up well.
- Place the sliced okra in the beaten egg mixture to coat the okra, do this in batches if needed. Make sure the okra is fully coated.
- Using a Ziploc Bag, add in the cornmeal, flour, and salt.
- Place the egg coated okra into the ziploc bag with the cornmeal mixture. Make sure that any excess egg drips off before placing them into the bag.
- Fully seal the bag and shake the okra well to coat.
- Spray the basket of the air fryer with grapeseed oil spray.
- Place an even layer of okra into the basket of the air fryer.
- Cook at 375 degrees F for 8-10 minutes or until browned to your preference.
- Continue doing this for each batch.
- Salt to taste.
Tips for the Best Air Fryer Okra:

- Single layer is key: If you stack okra, it will steam instead of frying. Be sure to keep the okra in a single layer in the air fryer basket. If needed, cook in batches.
- Check for Flour Spots: If you see any flour spots on the okra, give them a little spritz of cooking spray; this will make them golden brown instead of floury.
- Do not overslice: Keep the rounds about 1/2 inch thick to ensure that the interior stays tender while the outside is crisp.
- Frozen Okra: If you use frozen okra, do not defrost it; just increase the cooking time by 2-3 minutes.
Variations of Air Fryer Okra:

- Make it Spicy – For a spicy kick, add 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper or smoked paprika to the cornmeal mixture.
- Low-Carb Option – Stick to roasted okra or use almond flour and grated parmesan cheese instead of flour and cornmeal.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Overcrowding the basket is the main culprit. Be sure that air can circulate evenly around all sides of the okra; also, be sure to add oil spray; do not skip the spray.
Air fried okra is best served fresh. If you make it ahead of time, it may lose its crunch. To re-heat it, add it back to the air fryer with oil spray for 2-3 minutes.
Frozen okra can be used; do not defrost it, just add 2-3 minutes to the final cooking time.
This will be a controversial answer because truly deep-fried is the best, right? But as far as health goes, air fryer okra is much better for you with a significantly lower amount of oil.
Use an oil spray, this needs to be a non-aerosol spray, I use Pompeian Olive Oil Spray or Pompeian Grapeseed Oil Spray.
Use a high-quality gluten-free all-purpose flour with a 1:1 ratio. I prefer King Arthur Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour. Then, use a certified gluten-free cornmeal such as Bob’s Red Mill. Be sure to check all ingredients to ensure they are gluten-free, as they can change at any time.

Storage Tips:
Air-fried okra is best served fresh. If you do have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. When ready to serve, heat in the air fryer at 375 degrees F for 2-3 minutes with a light spritz of oil to restore crispy texture.
This Air Fryer Okra Recipe is proof that you can make a southern favorite a little better for you without all the oil and in a fraction of the time. Give it a try tonight and see if your family loves it as much as ours does!

Mine is more of a question than a comment. Our air fryer is a Max Kaloric or maybe Kaloric Max, I’m too lazy to go look. It’s the countertop convection oven that has bake, roast, and air fryer selections. My husband does all the cooking because I’m in a wheelchair and can’t reach. Anyway, he refuses to use the air fryer function because he #1 doesn’t follow instructions and #2 won’t use an oil sprayer because he’s afraid of fire and only uses olive oil to cook with. So on the v÷ry few times he’s tried it, everything is dry. Can any of your recipes (like fried okra) be used in what we have? Thank you.
Kristy says
They should all be able to be made in any air fryer. I haven’t looked at this specific one that you’re mentioning but if it has an air fryer function they should be able to be used with it. Grapeseed oil Spray is the best option because it has a higher smoke point than olive oil.
