Air Fryer Potato Chips are a commonly made recipe in the Air Fryer, they pair wonderfully with these Air Fryer Cheeseburgers or paired with your favorite sandwich.
Homemade Potato Chips are made with thin slices of potato and sea salt, that’s all you need for homemade potato chips. That means there are no extra additives and they are a better alternative than store-bought chips.
What do you need for Air Fryer Potato Chips?
- Baking Potatoes (Russet Potatoes)
- Grapeseed Oil Spray
- Kosher Salt or Sea Salt
What potatoes should you use for Air Fryer Potato Chips?
Russet Potatoes are the best choice for homemade potato chips for a couple of reasons.
First, Russet Potatoes have a high starch content and they are firm potatoes. The potatoes need to be firm and hard so that they can handle the high heat, yet stay crispy.
Secondly, Russet Potatoes have less moisture than other potatoes such as Red Potatoes or Yukon Gold Potatoes. While Yukon Gold could potentially work, they still have more moisture than you’ll likely want in your crunchy chips.
Our potatoes are washed and cleaned, but we do not peel them. If you prefer to peel them, that is a personal preference and up to you.
How thin should the potato slices be?
The potato slices should be about 1/8 inch or smaller. As you slice them, keep in mind how thin the actual potato chips are that you would buy at the store.
It’s best to use a mandoline slicer so that you can easily slice them; however, you can do them by hand as well with a very sharp knife.
As soon as you get done slicing the potatoes, place them on a paper plate and use paper towels to drain the potatoes, soaking up any extra water.
The thickness of your slices will also impact the cooking time, so be sure to get as close to 1/8 inch or less as possible.
Tips for Making Air Fryer Potato Chips Recipe:
Once the potatoes have been sliced and drained, coat the air fryer basket with Grapeseed Oil Spray. Oil Spray is going to be needed for this recipe. The oil spray will create a crunchy texture by giving them some moisture.
It’s imperative to use a spray with a high smoke point. Our go-to is Grapeseed Oil Spray.
Oil Spray will coat the basket, then the sliced potatoes will be evenly placed in the basket. Once they are in the basket, coat them with another coat of oil spray and then evenly top with sea salt or Kosher salt.
Cook the potato chips at 400 degrees F for 15 minutes, then carefully rotate and add more oil spray if you prefer and cook for an additional 5-10 minutes.
A few things to note, all air fryers heat differently, so the cooking time may vary depending on the type of Air Fryer that you use. These were made in a Ninja Air Fryer.
If this is your first time making them, carefully watch and check in on the chips so that they do not overcook.
The key is to get them cooked until they are golden brown on both sides.
Variations of Potato Chips:
Other seasonings can be sprinkled on the chips to give them different flavors such as:
- Barbecue Seasoning
- Ranch Seasoning
- Onion Powder
- Cajun Seasoning
- Garlic Salt
- Garlic Powder
Choose any of your favorite seasonings and variations to use. It’s a good idea to try out a few too and see what you think before sprinkling them on your entire batch of potato chips.
How do you store leftover potato chips?
Leftover potato chips can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature; however, they do become soggy potato chips the longer they are stored.
It’s best to serve them fresh to keep them crispy potato chips.
