Ingredients for Air Fryer Roast Recipe:
- Beef Chuck Roast
- Steak Seasoning
- Package Gluten-Free or Regular Brown Gravy Mix
- Water
- Unsalted Butter
- Parsley or Rosemary to Garnish
Step-by-Step Instructions for Air Fryer Roast Beef:
Find the easy printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Begin by preheating the air fryer to 390 degrees F for about 5 minutes.
- While this is preheating, season the roast evenly with steak seasoning.
- Combine the gravy with 1/2 cup water and set aside.
- Once the preheating time is up, carefully spray the air fryer with cooking oil spray of choice, such as grapeseed oil.
- Place the roast in the air fryer and let it cook at 390 degrees F for 15 minutes. This will sear the outside of the roast beef.
- Once the cooking time is up, prepare a sheet of foil to place the roast on.
- Carefully remove the roast from the air fryer and place it on the foil.
- Roll the foil up around the roast and place it back in the air fryer.
- At this point, be sure the foil is up around the sides of the roast to be sure that air will still circulate.
- Carefully pour the brown gravy mixture over the roast, evenly.
- Place the butter on top of the roast.
- Cook at 325 degrees F for 30-40 minutes until the internal temperature reaches at least 145 degrees F.
- Once done, let rest for 5 minutes, slice, and serve.
- Roast can be served with drippings as a gravy.
Tips for Making Air Fryer Beef Roast:

The roast should be thawed before beginning this recipe. This method does take some steps and patience, but it’s also very easy. The first thing you will want to do is preheat the air fryer for about 5 minutes, then place the roast in the air fryer to sear the outside.
It’s best to spray the air fryer with a cooking oil spray. The best oil sprays to use are olive oil spray, grapeseed oil spray, or avocado oil spray. Grapeseed Oil Spray will have the highest smoke point.
We use Weber Steak Seasoning on the roast, but any type of steak seasoning will work. A combination of seasonings such as kosher salt, black pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder can also be used. It can also be garnished with fresh herbs like fresh rosemary or fresh parsley. Be sure to follow the full instructions in the recipe card below.

- Choose the right cut – Beef Chuck Roast is the best cut for this recipe, it will crisp on the outside and have tender meat inside. Sirloin Tip Roast or Ribeye Roast can also be used, but again Beef Chuck is the best.
- Don’t skip searing – The searing step will lock in the juices and flavor of the roast.
- Use a meat thermometer – Always use a meat thermometer to be sure that you reach the correct internal temperature.
- Let the meat rest – Always let the meat rest for 5 minutes before serving; this allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat.
- Adjust the cooking time – If your roast is less than 3 pound roast, adjust the cooking time and monitor it throughout the cooking process.
- Use foil to catch the juices – We use foil around the roast beef to hold the juices of the meat and the butter.
- Slice against the grain – When ready to serve, slice the roast against the grain for the most tender roast beef.
Temperature of a Perfect Air Fryer Roast Beef:

Use a meat thermometer to monitor the internal temperature of the roast beef, and be sure to cook it to your preference.
- Medium Rare – 135 degrees F
- Medium Well – 145 degrees F
- Well Done – 160 degrees F
Can you put aluminum foil in the air fryer?

Aluminum foil can be used in the air fryer basket. This particular recipe keeps the outside of the roast from drying out and allows it to cook evenly by using foil in the air fryer. It also catches all the juices and seasoning drips, which helps your basket get less messy.
How do you store leftovers?
Once fully cooled, store leftover roast in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. When ready to serve, reheat at 350 degrees F for 2-3 minutes in the air fryer until warmed through.
Air Fryer Roast can easily be served with your favorite side dishes such as Air Fryer Roasted Carrots, Potatoes, or Asparagus.
Making a beef roast in the air fryer is quick, easy, and delicious. Once you try this air fryer beef roast recipe, youโll want it on your dinner menu year-round. Juicy, tender, and packed with flavor, itโs the perfect meal for busy families or cozy weekends at home!

Could you convert this recipe to be made in a convection oven? Iโm hesitant about pouring the gravy over the meat because of potential leaks. I donโt want a mess to clean up.
Kristy says
Yes, it probably could be and put in a pan, I don’t know though the exact cook times on that because I haven’t made it that way though so you’d have to watch it as far as the cooking time goes. If it helps, we did not have any leaks or mess because of the foil under it.
Don Estok says
I just loved how it turned outโฆ I made a slight adjustment; all during the cooking instruction, I cooked the beef in AuJus then recovered the liquid and poured it over the beef in foil. The liquid was thicker, and tastier. Butter was a great touch. Thank you for your recipe
Libby says
I’m making it now. It s looks great! Not done yet, but very easy cook method.
Rose G says
I just made this dish tonight for my son and his girlfriend and they loved it. The only thing I did differently was that I added baby carrots while meat was cooking then in the last 20 minutes I added baby potatoes cut in half tossed in olive oil with salt and pepper. It was awesome thanks for sharing.
Yvette says
Thanks Rose. Was wondering about that. I added mushrooms and wanna try a few carrots and potatoes. It’s in progress yummy
Debi says
Does it cook on air or the roast setting
Kristy says
I make this one using the Air Crisp function.
Tracey Townsend says
Just made this tonight and I won’t likely make roasts any other way now! So easy and so good! Thanks for sharing.
Renae says
This is awesome. I would love it if you would share this on The Fabulous Friday Link Party this Friday. https://www.peacockridgefarm.com/category/fabulous-friday-link-party/
Hugs to you.
suzan says
thanks………..have to try this way………..how did you cook veggies
Kristy says
I did the veggies separately in the air fryer, cook the carrots and potatoes for about 15-20 minutes at 390*F.
Jo Owens says
Sounds delicious! Going to give it a try. Do you have instructions as to how to fix meatloaf in an air fryer? Thanks.
Baltisraul says
Very nice meal and congrats on #303!
Jeanie says
My roast is only 1.5#. Should I adjust the cook time?
Kristy says
Yes I would adjust, you’ll likely just need to check on it throughout the cooking time and use a meat thermometer to check it.
Maryanne says
Why the foil? Canโt you just use the pan? Iโm looking for classic pot roast with potatoes and carrotsโฆ. And they all roast togetherโฆ.
Don says
I have a nika max what setting, max, air Fry, roast ? Thank youDon
Kristy says
You would use the Air Fry for any of the recipes on this site.
bobC says
Instead of aluminum foil, why not use an aluminum bowl that fits into the fryer basket? I’m making this tomorrow and that is what I’m going to try. Wish me luck.
Mike Z says
I use a 9″ cake pan works great
Sue says
What is the largest weight Beef Joint you can air cook. Have a large fryer.
Thanks
Kristy says
It’s going to depend on your air fryer. Mine won’t fit more than 3-4 lbs, but if yours is larger it may fit more but the time of cooking may need to be adjusted.
Randall P says
OMG! This recipe was so so good. I used Cajun steak seasoning to give it a little kick and it was fabulous. I used a beef shoulder roast which can often be tough. But this was like butter… Definitely my go-to recipe!
Jay says
As promised, live from canada.
Well done!
Kacee says
Chuck? Isn’t chuck best for boiled beef, etc. and not as a roast?
Kristy says
We love it, but you can always use whichever you prefer. https://www.tastingtable.com/1067796/absolute-best-cuts-of-meat-for-roast-beef/
Helena says
Can you use a cross rib roast the same recipe
Kristy says
I haven’t used that one yet, so you’d have to test it and see. You could start with the same time and temp and then check the internal temperature throughout cooking.
Randy says
Can you please explain why you use the Air Crisp setting instead of Roast for this? Sorry very new to air frying
Kristy says
Air Crisp is going to be like doing this in the Air Fryer. Roast is going to be more like baking so the time and temp will be different.
Niesha says
Is air fry setting same as air crisp?
Kristy says
Yes it is
Yvonne W. says
At first I was hesitant to cook my roast beef in the Air fryer. This far it’s turning out to be okay. I sauted the veggies first and then followed by putting the roast back in the Air fryer using the foil.
Cookie says
Iโve been hesitant to try things like this that are large and take a long time in my air fryer, but this one might be my first! I have a question though. I received a couple of silicone air fryer baskets to review, but upon receiving them, Iโm not sure how they will work in the air fryer. They had said they would replace the parchment paper ones, but the bottom of it has ridges, but no holes for air to get to the bottom. I can roll the sides down, so thatโs good.
So where do I set it? On the basket so it has a chance of air flow? Or in the pan.
have the Cuisinart Toa 60, toaster style air fryer. Itโs very similar to the Ninja.
The other question I have is can you use something like Better Than Bouillon low sodium Beef flavor instead of the gravy packet?
Thanks for sharing your recipes, and for your help.
Kristy says
I find the gravy packet gives it some moisture, I haven’t tried it with the bouillon so I’m not sure on that. I’d set it whichever fits best, I normally do mine on the basket but if it will work on the pan without anything coming out and spilling onto the sides you could do that as well.
GSI says
Should the meat be frozen or thawed?
Kristy says
We do this with thawed meat.

Honestly, I’d say this was THE BEST TASTING beef roast I’ve ever had. As far as taste, it is SUPERB. I did have to cook it a good bit longer and still couldn’t get it as tender as I might have liked. That may have been because this roast, though it only weighed slightly over two pounds was SO THICK. I have a fairly small air fryer–3 qt. so in order to get two pounds of roast the size to fit into its basket, it had to be thick. I would say that perhaps it tasted a bit more like a good steak than like normal roast, but to me that wasn’t truly a bad thing. But so very easy to fix and tastes SO GOOD. My daughter and I both LOVED it!!
