Tips for Making Gluten-Free Air Fryer Onion Rings:
When making onion rings, it’s best to keep a few things in mind. First, be sure to cut the onions about 1/4 inch thick or the size that you’d prefer for an onion ring.

If you use foil to line the air fryer, be sure the onions are weighing the foil down before starting your air fryer, this way the foil does not blow into the heating element. It’s also best to fold the foil up on the sides so that air is still able to circulate.
- Sweet Onions have the most perfect flavor, but if not sweet onions use white onion. If you use white onion, then soak in buttermilk first to tame the potent flavor of the onion.
- Using a light spray of olive oil spray is a must to get the crispy brown exterior.
- Make sure you batch cook so that they evenly cook on all sides.
- To reheat or keep them warm, place the batches on a sheet pan in the oven at 200 degrees F.

Gluten-Free Air Fryer Onion Rings
Ingredients
- 1 Large Sweet Onion or White Onion (Sliced about 1/4 inch slices) See Note
- 1 Cup Buttermilk See Note
- 2 Cups Gluten-Free All Purpose Flour or Regular Flour
- 2 Eggs Beaten
- 2 Cups Gluten-Free Breadcrumbs or Regular Bread Crumbs
- Salt to Taste
Instructions
- If using white onions – place the onions in a shallow bowl or dish and pour the buttermilk over them. (If using sweet onion, skip the buttermilk soaking.)
- Let them sit and soak for 1-2 hours.
- Just before cooking, coat the basket of the air fryer with grapeseed oil spray, olive oil spray, or line it with parchment paper or foil. If lined, be sure there is room on the sides for air to circulate.
- Prepare a bowl for the flour, a separate bowl for beaten eggs, and another bowl for the breadcrumbs.
- Add a dash of salt to the breadcrumbs.
- Dip the onions in the flour, dust off any excess.
- Dip them in the eggs, let the excess drip off.
- Coat with the breadcrumbs.
- Place evenly in the Air Fryer.
- At this point, you can add some salt to them or salt them after they are done.
- Fry them in the Air Fryer at 390°F for about 5 minutes on each side or until they are crispy.
- If you prefer, spray with some grapeseed oil spray to get them a little bit more brown in color. This is what will get rid of any floury texture.
- Serve.

Thank you!!! This worked GREAT in our new air fryer oven! One question: what’s the best way to avoid getting these huge clumps of flour egg and panko from sticking to your fingers????

This recipe is very like the one I’ve used for years. Mmmmm Using one hand for wet ingredients and one hand for dry ingredients will help. Using a fork to fish the onion rings from the wet helps, too.
