Why are they called funeral potatoes?
These potatoes got their name exactly from what you’d think…they are widely served at funerals and dubbed the “funeral potatoes”.
These are also served at potlucks as they are wonderful comfort food that serves a large amount.
This recipe takes that large comfort food and brings it down to a standard serving size for your own family dinner.
Tips to Make Air Fryer Funeral Potatoes:
This recipe can be made in the Air Fryer, Ninja Foodi, or Ninja Speedi using the Air Crisp function.
These are also made using an 8-inch cake pan, so be sure that this size will fit inside your air fryer basket.
If you need to make these gluten-free, use a gluten-free cream of chicken soup. This can be store-bought at most Walmart stores or homemade using this Gluten-Free Cream of Chicken Soup Recipe.
If you slice the potatoes more than 1/8-1/4 inch thick then the cooking time will take longer than what is stated in the recipe. The thicker the slices, the longer the cooking time.
In regards to the cheese, the pre-shredded bags of cheese do not melt as well as blocks of cheese that you shred at home, so I do suggest shredding your own block of cheese as opposed to pre-shredded bags.
How long can you store Air Fryer Funeral Potatoes?
These potatoes are good in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
When ready to serve, place them in a heat-proof container and then air fry them for 4-5 minutes at 375°F.
Variations of Air Fryer Funeral Potatoes:
Use different cheeses, this could be Monterey Jack for some spice or cheddar to please the kids.
Easily add bacon bits or cut the potatoes into smaller pieces too.
If you prefer to make it deluxe, then add some herbs, use cream of mushroom instead of cream of chicken, or add fresh Parmigiano to serve.

Air Fryer Funeral Potatoes
- 2 Cups Potatoes (Sliced 1/8-1/4in Thick)
- 6 Tbsp Melted Butter, Divided
- 1 1/2 Tsp Salt
- 1/2 Tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 Tsp Onion Powder
- 1/4 Tsp Ground Black Pepper
- 1/4 Tsp Paprika
- 10.5 oz Can Cream of Chicken Soup
- 1 Cup Shredded Mozzarella
- 1 Cup Shredded Colby Jack
- 1 Cup Crushed Potato Chips (Lay's)
- Butter or oil an 8-inch cake pan and set aside.
- Clean the potatoes and slice them if not already to 1/4-1/8 inch thick.
- Place the slices into a bowl of cold water.
- Once the potatoes are sliced and clean, pat dry with a towel.
- Place all the potatoes into a large mixing bowl.
- Add 4 tbsp of melted butter and mix to coat the potatoes with butter.
- Sprinkle with salt, garlic powder, onion powder, ground black pepper, and paprika. Mix this well.
- Add the cream of chicken soup and mix so all potatoes are coated with seasonings and soup.
- Place 1 layer of potatoes in the pan and sprinkle with cheese using about 1/4 cup of the cheese.
- Repeat until you have used all the potatoes, sprinkle cheese between the layers.
- Add additional cheese, about 1/2 cup.
- In a separate bowl, crush the potato chips and add 2 tbsp of butter. Add this mixture onto the top layer.
- Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top. Gently press it all down.
- Place in the air fryer at 330°F and cook for 25-30 minutes. Remember the time will vary depending on the air fryer, so be sure to watch it closely.
- The potatoes are done when a knife can easily be cut through them. Serve!
